This link includes an installer that installs an updated version of the component and framework. This new version includes more options and seems to work on both PPC and Intel Macs.

Has there been any change in the situation since 2006? Does Metro export mp3 files?

Yes with the Lame converter installed. Please click the link on the first page of this thread to download the installer.
