Assign a Rhythm Pattern

To assign a rhythm pattern as criteria for a selection, you must select a onemeasure pattern before accessing the Selection Filter’s Assign To dialog box. If a selection lasts longer than one measure, the pattern will bederived from only the first measure of that selection.

To assign a rhythm pattern:

  1. Locate in the Graphic Editor window the measure that contains the desired beatpattern. If one doesn’t exist that you like, you can Step Enter a new pattern into an empty measure(pitch doesn’t matter, only rhythm).

  2. Once a measure contains the desired pattern, drag over it to select it (orsimply click on the Bar number in the Time Line to quickly select that entire measure).

  3. Next, open the Selection Filter command’s Assign To submenu to open the Assign to Selection Filter dialog box.

  4. Notice that the pattern appears in the Assign To dialog box in the four beat, single measure field (take note that the beatdisplay in the Assign To dialog is completely dependent on the current time signature; you would seeseven beats if working in a time signature of 7/8). At this point you have theoption of deleting any undesired notes in the displayed pattern by clicking onthem.

  5. If you want to select notes that conform to a rhythm pattern, check the Start Times... box.

  6. Choose either Occur or Don’t Occur depending on whether you want to specify notes with start times that do or don’t occur within a particular number of clocks of the selected rhythm.

  7. Enter the distance (in clocks) that a note can vary from the rhythm patternand yet still be selected by the Selection Filter.

  8. Click OK when the pattern and settings look right.

This pattern remains assigned to the Selection Filter until you assign anotherpattern, Edit the current pattern, or Quit Metro.

If you desire to alter Selection Filter criteria that you have previouslyassigned, choose the Selection Filter command’s Edit submenu to open the Edit Selection Filter dialog box. Make any desiredchanges and click OK.
